What happens if you don't 'make it' as a creative person?

Today I was ‘checking out’ my groceries at Whole Foods in West Hollywood and the bag boy at the end of the line ‘struck up’ a conversation with me. This bag boy proceeded to tell me that he was an ‘actor’. He was a black guy - probably about 30-35 years of age, someone who I’ve noticed every time I’ve visited this particular store. Every time I see him he seems to be ‘goofing off’. Seems like the type who was a ‘fuck up’ in elementary/high school.

Anyway, as I took my food back to my car and devoured it, a question entered my head: at what point in your life do you realistically know you’re not going to ‘make it’? I understand there are optimists out there who believe ‘it’s never too late’, but I think we can all agree that there comes an age in your life where ‘making it’ is as likely as hitting the lotto.

This dilemma specifically affects creative people because creatives are on their own in ‘finding a way’ to make the world appreciate their art/music/designs/photography, etc. They have to somehow ‘start from scratch’ and get enough people to pay for their artistic contributions so that they can eat/pay rent/raise a family/’go clubbing’, etc. There are millions of photographers who haven’t ‘made it’ (and never will) for every Annie Leibovitz.

So:

Do you think there’s an age where ‘making it’ is unrealistic?

What happens to the people who don’t ‘make it’? Do they become bag boys at Whole Foods? Do they regret choosing that career path for the rest of their existence?

Decided that I’m going to buy an XBOX 360 within the next week. Last night I played Evan Rogers in NBA 2K7 and ‘beat him’ by 50 points with the Lakers, then did it again by 30 points with the shitty New York Knicks.

It’ll be a good way to ‘pass time’ while simultaneously pleasuring my competitive rage. Hopefully I’ll be able to ‘balance’ this with my work/personal life.

This piece makes so much sense to me after last night. Since I had never been in a ‘drunken state’ until yesterday, I didn’t realize how well the director captured the mood (or how well Kanye portrayed it) when I saw this the first time.
